Move With ElanWhile the street address is 351 W. Main, one enters the building through the "back" door, from the parking lot on Ramseur St. Using "Google" or "Mapquest" to locate the class will get you close, but entry is not on the Main Street side of the building!
Take I-40 West, exit at 147 North to get to Durham. Get off 147
at exit 12-C -- Duke Street. Go north on Duke St to second
traffic light and take a right on Chapel Hill St (if you went
straight through the light, you could get to Brightleaf Square).
Go through light at Pettigrew (ie, you go straight under the
railroad trestle).
PARKING OPTION 1
Take a right at the next light (just after going
under railroad) onto Durham's Downtown Loop (called Ramseur right
there). *Immediately* get into left hand lane of loop -- you
have to cross 2 or 3 lanes, but since you are entering at a
traffic light onto a one way street, it's easy. Park on the left
side of the street in the parallel parking places. Walk into
the parking lot through the driving entrance gate. Directly
in front of you is a white-washed brick building with
a set of red metal stairs going to an
upstairs apartment, surrounded by an arbor and container garden.
At ground level by the garden is a door with a purple
awning. That is the Dojo. Come on in!!!
CAUTION: STEP DOWN AS YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOOR!!
PARKING OPTION 2
After passing under the railroad trestle, go through the light
and take a right into the first parking lot you come to. This is
right next to the (now empty) Book Exchange building and is fairly small, but
there is often room. (OR you can park in the
spaces on the street in either direction on Chapel Hill Street in front of
the (former) Book Exchange building.
To get to the dojo, go
out on the sidewalk side of the parking lot, pass Kimbrell's Furniture, and
turn right down the wide, paved alley between the buildings. At the end of the
alley, turn left and see the container garden at the next
entrance over - the door with the purple awning into the building with the
container garden is it! Come on in!! CAUTION: STEP DOWN
AS YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOOR!!
Take 15-510 bypass to 147 South towards downtown Durham. Use Exit 13, take a left at the end of the ramp onto Chapel Hill Street. Proceed on Chapel Hill Street through lights at Gregson and Duke Streets. Go through another light at Pettigrew street (before the railroad trestle). Then see directions above for parking choices.
Take your favored route south toward downtown Durham. If you come directly
to the "Downtown Loop", stay on the loop through the Main Street intersection.
Parking option 1 (above) is available if you go through the light at Chapel Hill St.
Parking option 2 (above) is available if you go left at Chapel Hill St.
There is also on-street parking along Main Street in both directions. If you park
on Main or Chapel Hill St, you will need to walk down the alley next to Kimbrell's
Furniture to get to the purple door surrounded by the container garden.
If you come toward Brightleaf Square (corner of Gregson and Main), turn left
on West Morgan Street or on the newly reopened Main Street (there could occasionally
still be closings on Main - the orange barrels are still present). Either W. Morgan or
Main Street will take you to the downtown loop. Turn right on the downtown loop and
choose one of the parking options.
